A real document, a wrong molecule

Start with the document, because everything else here follows from it.

A certificate of analysis is the laboratory report that is supposed to establish what a product is and how much of it a vial contains. The founder had one in front of him, for a peptide he had purchased. It was not forged. The laboratory that issued it was real and independent. The purity number — how much of the vial was a single substance — was excellent, the kind of figure this industry prints in bold type.

Then he compared the mass under the main peak of the chromatogram — the chart an analytical instrument draws, in which each substance in a sample appears as its own peak — against the mass of the molecule named on the label. They did not match. The vial held one clean, well-made substance. It was a different substance.

The laboratory confirmed what he was reading, and added something worse: this was a pattern across its incoming samples. Products sold under one name kept turning out to be another. And nobody in the chain was lying. The seller believed the label; the label repeated the invoice; the certificate was accurate about everything it measured. Nobody had checked whether the name and the numbers described the same molecule.

You will not find the laboratory’s name here, or the seller’s, or the report number. That is deliberate. Names would let you file this away as one bad actor, and there was no bad actor. There was a document accurate enough to be believed, specific enough to be quoted, and checked by no one. The arithmetic that would have caught it takes about a minute. No one had spent the minute.

The lesson is the one this site repeats more than any other: purity is not identity. Purity tells you how much of the vial is one thing. Identity tells you which thing. That certificate answered the first question precisely — and was silently trusted on the second.

That document is this company. A certificate written against a name — believed because it exists, quoted because it is specific, verified by no one — is the exact failure Unequivocal exists to answer.

What we built because of it

Everything we do is a direct consequence of some line in that document.

Because that certificate was written after the material existed, we publish the specification first. Before any lot — a single production run of one molecule — exists, the numeric pass-or-fail limits it must meet are already public. A document written after the fact can be fitted to the material. A specification published in advance is a promise the material has to keep.

Because a certificate hosted on a seller’s website is ultimately the seller’s word, ours stay with the laboratory. Every certificate lives on the independent laboratory’s own system, and that is where you read it. We link to our results; we do not host our own report card.

Because a wall of passing results proves nothing — you cannot tell rigor from luck until something fails in public — we publish our failures. A lot that misses its specification does not release, the material is destroyed, and the record is posted to the failed-lot ledger, permanently, beside the passes.

And because one excellent number told the founder nothing about identity, no single number releases a lot here. Every lot is tested against the 14-Point Quality Framework, which begins exactly where that certificate went wrong: identity — is this the molecule on the label — before purity or anything else.

The other half of the fix is you

Testing settles the question for our lots. It does not fix the habit that let a wrong molecule travel under a correct document: buyers who cannot check the paperwork they are handed. So this site has a second job, and we do not treat it as the smaller one. We intend to teach you, plainly and term by term, until you can evaluate any supplier’s evidence yourself. Any supplier’s. Including ours. The teaching pages here exist so that you never again take a document on faith because it looks precise. A buyer who does the minute of arithmetic is the one audit this industry cannot route around.

We gave the whole discipline a single name so it can be pointed at, and demanded. The Unequivocal Standard is not a slogan on a label; it is the set of obligations this page has just described. The specification before the lot. The certificate held by the independent laboratory. The failure published beside the pass. The buyer taught until they can check the work. Hold us to all four — and hold anyone else to them too. The name is meant to travel.
