Sodium Hyaluronate
Also indexed as Hyaluronan sodium, NaHA
1 Identity
Heterogeneous polymer — not A single molecule and not A peptide. A linear unbranched non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan of repeating glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine disaccharides. Every batch is a chain-length distribution; commercial grades run from about 5 kDa to over 2 MDa. and INCI Sodium Hyaluronate. The free acid is INCI Hyaluronic Acid, CAS 9004-61-9, a different entry. One major seller lists this material as sodium Hyaluronate peptide powder, a name that calls a polysaccharide a peptide.
- Sequence
- Not applicable — a polysaccharide has no amino-acid sequence.
- Molecular formula
- Not applicable for the polymer. Repeating unit only: (C14H20NNaO11)n, repeating-unit formula weight 401.3.
- Average mass
- Not applicable as A single value. Molecular weight is A grade parameter here, not an identity parameter: two materials with the same CAS, the same monograph compliance and the same assay can behave completely differently depending on chain length. It must be reported as weight-average, number-average and polydispersity by size-exclusion with multi-angle light scattering, or as viscometric average via intrinsic viscosity.
- Monoisotopic mass
- Not applicable. A polydisperse chain-length distribution has no monoisotopic mass.
- Salt / variant note
- Hyaluronic acid free acid, CAS 9004-61-9, which is not interchangeable with this article on a certificate. CROSSLINKED HA, as used in dermal fillers, which is a different material that CAS 9067-32-7 does not describe and which requires degree-of-modification and free-BDDE testing. Bacterial-fermentation against rooster-comb source material, which differ in protein and nucleic-acid burden. And the grade ladder itself: 8-15 kDa, 30-50 kDa, 70-120 kDa and 1.5-1.8 MDa are all this CAS and are not substitutable for one another.
2 Class & testing panel
- Form
- Single article
- Testing panel
- Special-class panel — panel definition
3 Primary sources & evidence
The material is thoroughly characterized as a class and the pharmacopeial framework is authoritative. There is no single-molecule identity to evidence.
4 Storage & specification
- Storage
- Ambient to 2-8 degrees C, dry, sealed, protected from light and humidity. Strongly hygroscopic. Solutions degrade by chain scission and lose viscosity without any change in assay, which is why viscosity is the stability-indicating attribute and assay is not.
- Shelf life
- Per supplier specification against measured viscosity stability. Not assignable by protocol.
This record reports identity, specification and study design. It does not state what the article does in a human body. Supplied under the caution: “CAUTION: Contains a new drug for investigational use only in laboratory research animals or for tests in vitro. Not for use in humans.”
